Causes and symptoms

There are several reasons that result in ingrowing toenails: tight footwear, involuted or wide nails or rough edges that are left to grow. It is very common that the skin can then become inflamed and possibly infected. Usually, it is the big toe which gets affected, but an ingrowing nail can affect any toe.

Teenagers and young adults are the most common category of people that ingrowing nails affect.

Symptoms: Red, painful, swelling, warm, the presence of pus if it’s infected for which antibiotics will be needed.

Treatment of ingrowing toenails

Nail surgery is a procedure which is carried out under local anaesthetic to treat the ingrowing toenail when it pierces the flesh of the toe.  In most cases just a small section of nail is removed – this is a partial nail removal and can leave the nail permanently narrower. Sometimes, a total nail removal may be performed where the entire nail is removed. In most surgeries the chemical, phenol, is used to cauterise the nail and prevent regrowth.  This will help prevent any further problems returning.
